How It Works
In medication-assisted treatment, the administered medications do NOT make the patient “high.” Instead, they restore balance to the areas of the brain that are affected by addiction. This relieves the patient’s withdrawal symptoms and psychological cravings, allowing the brain to heal while he or she works toward recovery.
Types of Medications
Treatment is customized to each patient’s needs using a variety of medication options, including methadone, buprenorphine, naltrexone and naloxone. All medications are FDA-approved for treatment of substance use disorders.
Proven Benefits
Medication-assisted treatment is validated by the American Medical Association, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and others as a first-line treatment for addiction. Research shows it can:
Improve patient survival/reduce overdoses
Improve the patient’s ability to handle stress
Improve the rate of long-term recovery
Decrease illicit drug use and other criminal activity among people with substance use disorders
Increase patients’ ability to gain and maintain employment
Improve birth outcomes for pregnant women who have substance use disorders
